Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform

Qualcomm just introduced its latest flagship mobile platform Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 at its Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2022 event. Snapdragon 8 Gen promises 35% performance improvements and 40% improved power efficiency.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is built on a 4nm TSMC manufacturing process. It features an octa-core CPU. It has a single Kryo Prime core based on Cortex-X3 running at 3.2GHz. It has four Performance cores clocked at 2.8GHz and three Efficiency cores at 2.0GHz.

The new Adreno GPU also promises up to 25% higher performance and up to 45% higher power efficiency. It supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing. This GPU is also the first to support Vulkan 1.3.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform supports LP-DDR5X RAM and new UFS 4.0 storage.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 supports on-device displays with QHD+ resolution at up to 144Hz or 4K at up to 60Hz. The display supports 10-bit color, HDR10, HDR10+, HDR vivid, and Dolby Vision. It also supports external displays up to 4K at 60Hz. Qualcomm has finally enabled AV1 video decoding.

The ISP supports up to 200 megapixels of photo capture. It supports Up to 36 MP triple cameras, or Up to 64+36MP dual cameras, or up to 108 megapixels single camera. It can record 8K HDR @ 30 fps videos and 720p@960 fps slo-mo videos. It also supports several HDR formats including HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision.

The new Hexagon processor brings support for a new INT4 format with a promise to offer 60% better performance. The AI performance has increased by 4.35 times. The camera can recognize several parts of the image like face, hair, clothes, background, and so on.

The mobile platform features a Snapdragon X70 modem. It supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G. The company boasts peak downlink speeds of 10Gbps and peak uplink speed of 3.5Gbps. Other connectivity options include upcoming Wi-Fi 7 standard (802.11be) and Bluetooth 5.3.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will soon be available in flagship phones by Asus ROG, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Red Magic, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, Meizu, and ZTE. Surprisingly, the company didn’t mention Samsung in the press release. The first phone powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to be available before the end of this year.
