As per a report from research firm Counterpoint Research, the Indian smartphone market saw an 11% year-on-year decline in Q3, 2022. Xiaomi is still at the top with a 21% market share but saw a drop in market share as compared to Q3, 2021.
The report claims that iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone in Q3, 2022. This was the first time when an iPhone topped the overall smartphone sales in the country. It seems the heavy discounts during sales helped the company a lot. The iPhone 13’s demand also helped Apple achieve its highest-ever market share in India. The company now has a 5% market share in India. If we consider the premium segment, Apple has a market share of 40%.
Xiaomi is still the top smartphone vendor but saw a year-on-year decline in market share from 23% to 21%. Samsung managed to close the gap by increasing its market share from 17% to 19%. Vivo, Realme, and Oppo got the market share of 14%, 14%, and 10% respectively.
Samsung was the fastest-growing smartphone brand among the top 5 brands and also the top brand in September 2022. If we consider overall mobile phone markets including feature phones and smartphones, Samsung was the top brand with an 18% market share.
The report also confirmed that one in three smartphones sold during the third quarter in India was a 5G smartphone. Samsung led the 5G phones sale in the country with 20% of the market share. OnePlus captured 2nd place in 5G smartphone shipments and grew 35% YoY in Q3 2022.
Google and Nothing also managed to get a good customer base. Pixel 6a performed well during August and September. It will be interesting to see their growth in the coming quarters.
