Samsung announces UFS 4.0 storage with faster and improved power-efficiency

UFS 4.0

Samsung today announced the latest version of its Universal Flash Storage (UFS). The company calls it the version 4. UFS 4.0 will go into mass production by Q3 2022 and we can expect it in devices in early next year.

UFS 4.0 uses Samsung’s Gen 7 V-NAND memory and proprietary controller. It boasts sequential read speeds of up to 4,200 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s. Ut also supports up to 23.2Gbps per lane. That’s double of what UFS 3.1 can deliver.

The company claims that the new storage delivers a 46% power-efficiency improvement as compared to the previous generation of storage.

Samsung also confirmed that the new storage can be configured to support up to 1TB of storage. So, we can expect more smartphones with 1TB of storage.

The company even managed to make the storage chips smaller. A 512GB UFS 3.1 module measures 11.5 x 13 x 1.0mm. On the other hand, the 1TB UFS 4.0 module measures 11 x 13 x 1mm.

UFS 4.0 is mainly for smartphones but it could also be adopted by AR, VR, and automotive applications.
