Back in April 2015, Microsoft released the Edge web browser for Windows 10 and later brought it to Android and iOS. Now after 7 years of its initial release, the web browser has overtaken Apple’s Safari to become 2nd most popular desktop browser. It now has 10.07 percent of the market share while Safari stands at 9.61 percent.

Edge beats Safari

Google Chrome is still at the top with a 66.64 percent desktop browser market share. Mozilla’s Firefox browser has a 7.86 percent market share to be at the fourth place.

Microsoft initially built Edge on its own proprietary browser engine EdgeHTML and Chakra JavaScript engine. Later the company rebuilt the browser using Chromium. This new Edge was rolled out in 2020 and started getting the attention of users.

Edge is also available on smartphone platforms but has no considerable market share. Chrome is the leading smartphone browser with 62.8 percent market share followed by Safari that has 25.35 percent market share to be at the 2nd place.
