Twitter is finally getting an edit button

Finally, Twitter is getting the edit button to edit tweets after posting them. The company has just announced that users will soon get the edit button. The company will start testing it initially with Twitter Blue subscribers. Official Twitter Communications account also tweeted a mock-up of the feature to show how it would work.

The Tweet also claims that the company has been working on the Edit feature since last year. So, we shouldn’t thank Elon Musk for this.

Jay Sullivan, Head of Consumer Product, also shared some details of the edit feature. He also confirmed that the company has been working on the Edit feature since last year. Once the feature is available, users will be able to fix mistakes and typos in their Tweets without deleting them. For now, users need to delete the existing Tweet and compose a new one. He also said that the feature will come with time limits, controls, and transparency to avoid misuse.

The company will be actively seeking input and adversarial thinking before launching this feature to everyone.

On April 1st, Twitter tweeted about the edit button. So, no one took it seriously because it could be an April Fool’s prank. But the debate around the edit button became serious when Elon Musk posted a poll asking users if they want an edit button. He recently bought 9.2% of Twitter and took a board seat. This poll brought some hope. So far, more than 70% of respondents have voted “yse.”

I think Elon intentionally misspelled Yes in the poll to give an idea of why the edit button is required on Twitter.

Several Twitter users have been asking for the edit button for many years. So there was no way you could fix a type in your Tweets. Back in 2020, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said that Twitter would “probably never” add the edit button. It seems things have changed after new CEO Parag Agrawal took the charge of Twitter.

Twitter’s edit feature will intially be available to Blue Blue subscribers who already enjoy undo feature that lets you recall a tweet before you send it
