Block, formerly known as Square, has today in a filing with US Securities and Exchange Commission confirmed a security breach affecting 8.2 million Cash App customers. The company claims that a former employee downloaded a number of reports containing information about US customers on December 10. Although this employee had access to these reports as a part of his job responsibilities, he accessed the reports after his employment ended.

The company didn’t mention why an employee who had already left the company a few months ago still had access to such highly sensitive information.

The information included full names and brokerage account numbers. Some of the reports also included brokerage portfolio value, brokerage portfolio holdings, and stock trading activity of daily trading.

Block further claims that no personal information, beyond names, names were accessed. Information such as usernames or passwords, Social Security numbers, payment card details, or addresses is safe. The breach doesn’t affect other Cash App products and features. Information about customers living outside of the U.S. is also safe.

The company has contacted law enforcement and launched a formal investigation into the incident. It will also notify all 8.2 million customers whose information was accessed.

Cash app began operation as a peer-to-peer payment app. later it also added stock purchase and crypto investments.
