Microsoft has released its DirectStorage API for PC game developers. DirectStorage promises faster game loading, especially on NVMe SSDs. Previously, a game could only perform in or out access at a time. Now a game can perform multiple in and out access at the same time and use the full performance potential of SSD storage.

DirectStorage speeds up load time on PC by tapping into how GPU interacts with SSD to increase data transfer. If you pause a game and resume after sometime, the game resumes without time-consuming loading screens.

Micorosft has now released the SDK for developers. So, games supporting DirectStorage API is not yet available. Developers are now working to add support for DirectStorage in their games. So, we still don’t know what games will support DirectStorage API in near future. Games developed by Microsoft will surely come first.

Windows PC gamers with compatible motherboard and NVMe M.2 SSD will be able to enjoy DirectStorage when game starts supporting it. We are still waiting for games supporting DirectStorage, I cannot say how it is going to impact gaming performance.

Although the technology was made for PC by keeping Windows 11 in the mind, it is also compatible with Windows 10.
