Sony has announced the financial results of the quarter ended December 2021. The company revealed that it shipped 3.9 million PlayStation 5s during the period. So, the company shipped 17.3 million Playstation 5 consoles in 2021.

If we compare the sales number with PlayStation 4 sales, Sony couldn’t beat the previous consoles sale. PS4 sold 20 million units in the same time frame.

The company has also altered its estimate of 20.2 million total console sales by March 2022 and now expects to sell a total of 19.3 million. The reason for this change could be the global semiconductor and chip shortage.

In terms of revenue, it was the second-best quarter for the company and Sony recorded the best operating profit ever in the third quarter and third-best in any quarter.

PS5 and PS4 sold a combined total of 92.7 million games and the company earned $3.80 billion from digital games and add-ons. There are currently 111 million active PlayStation users.

Sony also confirmed that the company aims to launch more than 10 live service games by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The company didn’t confirm anything about the upcoming live services. After the acquisition of Bungie, Sony also aims to boost first-party software revenue.
