Google initially launched Chrome os for Chromebooks but was also working on CloudReady OS, a fork of Chromium OS, for people who wanted to experience Chrome OS on their existing PCs. Google acquired CloudReady in 2020. Now Google has released CloudReady OS as Chrome OS Flex. Chrome OS Flex is a free-to-download operating system built for Businesses and schools that want to experience Chrome OS on PCs and Macs.
Chrome OS Flex is a modified version of Chrome OS. Both Chrome OS and Chrome OS Flex use the same code base. So, it has the same interface you see on Chromebook. Just like in Chrome OS, a system running Chrome OS Flex can also be remotely managed. The OS includes Google Assistant, support for Family Link accounts, Nearby Sharing, Smart Lock, and Instant Tethering.
Chrome OS Flex is fully compatible with Google’s powerful cloud-based management and provides a clutter-free experience. Google claims that Chrome OS Flex boots up in seconds and won’t slow down over time. It also has built-in protection against threats including viruses, ransomware, and phishing. So, there is also no need for antivirus software.
For businesses, most IT management abilities are available. There are more than 500+ policies and controls with several pre-set policies recommended by Google.
Google confirms that Chrome OS Flex doesn’t support ARM PCs yet. So, you cannot install Chrome OS Flex on machines like the Surface Pro X and 2021 MacBook Pro. Chrome OS Flex also lacks Android app support and Parallels Desktop.
Google recommends users to first try Chrome OS Flex without installing and by booting directly from the USB drive. Once you are ready, install it on your PC or Mac by replacing the existing operating system for the best experience.
