Google is killing Chrome’s ‘Lite Mode’ next month

Chrome Android

Lite Mode, originally known as Dat Saver, has been part of Google Chrome for Android since 2014. Now Google has decided to kill it. It will be removed with the upcoming Chrome 100 release.

“On March 29th, 2022, with the release of Chrome M100 to the stable channel, we’ll turn off Lite mode, a Chrome feature for Android that we introduced back in 2014 as Chrome Data Saver to help people use less mobile data on their phones and load web pages faster,” wrote Craig, Chrome Support Manager, in a recent post on the Support forum.

Lite Mode aimed to offer a faster web experience on mobile devices. Now when mobile data is cheap in most countries and Google also offers AMP to make web pages fast on mobile devices, Lite Mode is no longer needed. Google thinks it is safe to get rid of Lite Mode for a good reason.

Lite Mode can be enabled in Google Chrome from the Advanced section of the Settings page. When Lite Mode is on, this speeds up web page loading and saves data. If a web page is heavy, Lide Mode sends the page to Google servers to compress and simplify it for a faster web experience.

Google has already removed Lite Mode from Chrome Canary. Chrome Beta and then Chrome Stable will follow suit in the coming weeks.
