Samsung announces Exynos 2200 SoC with AMD ray-tracing GPU

Samsung Exynos 2200

Samsung just announced its new flagship SoC Samsung Exynos 2200. This SoC will compete against Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. This is the first SoC that includes a GPU with AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics architecture and enables hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Samsung and AMD announced their collaboration back in 2019 and have been working since then to make this Soc. Exynos 2200 is expected to power the upcoming Galaxy S22 series.

Exynos 2200 is manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm EUV process. The processor uses Armv9 cores. There is one high-power Cortex-X2 core along with three Cortex-A710 cores for balanced performance and four efficient Cortex-A510 cores.

The Soc includes Xclipse GPU based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture. So, it comes with features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) to offer a PC or console-like gaming experience on smartphones.

The company also boasts powerful on-device artificial intelligence with upgraded NPU. The NPU used in Exynos 2200 promises twice the performance as compared to its predecessor.

The ISP used in the SoC supports cameras with resolutions of up to 200-megapixels. It also supports 4K HDR (or 8K) resolution video recording. The multi-format codec (MFC) can decode videos up to 4K at 240fps or 8K at 60fps and encodes up to 4K at 120fps or 8K at 30fps.

It also comes with a 3GPP Release 16 5G modem that offers support for both sub-6GHz and mmWave. It boasts a top speed of 7.35Gbps download. With E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) feature, the speed can be boosted to offer up to 10Gbps by utilizing both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals.

Samsung also confirms that Exynos 2200 SoC is already in mass production but didn’t confirm when it could be available on consumer devices. The SoC was earlier rumored to be announced on January 11 but delayed. We are expecting Galaxy S22 series to include Exynos 2200 SoC in selected countries including India. Let’s see if that happens.
