Chinese short video app TikTok is now more popular than YouTube in the UK and the US. TikTok has a longer average watch time than YouTube in these countries. Better average watch time indicates better engagement. YouTube still retains the top spot for the average time per user spent on the apps.

This report is based on the data provided by app monitoring firm App Annie. So, the data is estimated, not official. The report only accounts for Android users and also excluded China where TikTok is known as Douyin.

Here, it is worth noting that YouTube has over two billion monthly users while TikTok has around 700 million. That’s the reason YouTube still leads in overall time spent and has lowaverage watch time.

App Annie also claims that TikTok is the most downloaded app worldwide since 2020 and has continued to maintain its dominance.

YouTube knows how short videos are getting better engagement. That’s the reason it has created YouTube Shorts for short videos similar to TikTok. YouTube Shorts is part of YouTube’s app and website. While the section is live for months, most creators still prefer posting videos on TikTok and Instagram.
