TikTok surpasses 1 billion monthly active users

TikTok

Popular short-video company has confirmed that it has passed 1 billion monthly active users. The app was launched back in 2018 and faced several roadblocks.

The pandemic helped Tiktok a lot and the app became the most downloaded app in the world in the first quarter of 2020. As per the data by app analytics company SensorTower, Tiktok recorded 315 million downloads in that quarter alone. Back in July, TikTok also became the first non-Facebook app to reach 3 billion global downloads and it had 689 million monthly active users at that time.

TikTok confirmed that its biggest markets are in the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. The app was also popular in India but the Indian government decided to ban the app due to its Chinese roots. Trump also attempted to back TikTok in the US but current President Biden removed all the roadblocks created by Trump.

TikTok’s primary competitor is Instagram. Other companies such as Facebook, YouTube, Reddit are also trying short-form video feeds, but Instagram’s Reels is the only one that is competing well against TikTok.

TikTok is still growing at an impressive rate. The parent company ByteDance is headquartered in China. The company recently bought the VR hardware company Pico. It hints at a possible expansion of the app into VR. The company has also reportedly postponed its plans for an initial public offering after Chinese regulators started cracking down on tech firms.
