Oppo has unveiled its next-generation under-screen camera technology. The company claims that the new tech captures good photos without compromising the integrity of the screen.

Previously, the company was using less pixel density in the portion of the screen that covers the camera under it. Now the company is using smaller pixels to maintain the same pixel density as the rest of the OLED panel. So, there will be no visual difference between the camera area and other parts of the display.

Here’s how the phone’s display will look.

In under-display camera tech light travels through the gaps between each OLED pixel. So, it needs AI compensation for accurate photos. Oppo uses AI to achieve accurate corrections on diffraction, white balance, and HDR. It has already trained its AI engine by using tens of thousands of photos.

Oppo also promises good selfies even if the camera is placed under the display. Here’s a photo of the camera sample provided by Oppo.

ZTE’s Axon 20 5G was the first under-display camera phone to hit the market. The latest ZTE Axon 30 boasts improved tech.

Oppo first demonstrated its under-display camera tech at MWC Shanghai in 2019 but has yet to launch a commercial device for consumers.
