Xiaomi overtakes Apple to become 2nd largest smartphone brand globally in terms of shipments

At the time when Xiaomi is celebrating its 7th anniversary in India, the company got big news from analysis firm Canalys. As per the new report from Canalys, Xiaomi is now the 2nd largest smartphone brand based on worldwide shipments in the second quarter of 2021.

Xiaomi’s growth is primarily led by shipments growth in overseas markets. The company grew shipments by more than 300 percent in Latin America, 150 percent in Africa, and 50 percent in Western Europe. Not just budget and mid-range phones, Xiaomi also saw an increase in its sales of high-end devices like the Mi 11 Ultra.

Samsung is still at the top with a 19% market share. It also managed to grow shipments by 15% as compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020. Xiaomi achieved 83% growth in shipment to surpass Apple in Q2, 2022. The company has a 14% market share in smartphone shipments. Apple, Oppo, and Vivo are at 3rd, 4th, and 5th places with 14%, 10%, and 10% market share respectively.

Canalys report also confirmed that global smartphone shipments grew by 12 percent last quarter. Back in 2019, Huawei also overtook Apple but it had to shut down smartphone shipment in the global market due to US-imposed sanctions and trading bans. It seems Xiaomi is the biggest beneficiary of Huawei’s fall.
