Apple beats Samsung to be top smartphone market for the first time since 2016

Apple

Despite the drop in the overall smartphone market due to the pandemic, Apple managed to maintain good sales. Now Apple has beaten Samsung for the first time since 2016 to be the top smartphone market.

As per Gartner’s report, Apple sold 79.9 million iPhones while Samsung’s smartphone sale was just 62.1 million in the final three months of 2020. Overall Smartphone sales declined to 5.4 percent during this time. Apple saw 14.9 percent year-on-year growth while Samsung saw a 14.6 percent drop in sales.

If we look at the while 2020 sales figure, Samsung is ahead with more numbers. But numbers of last quarters are alarming for Samsung. It seems more people are choosing iPhones over Android smartphones. The iPhone 11 series helped Apple a lot and now iPhone 12 series with 5G is also attracting consumers.

If I talk bout other places China-based Xiaomi and Oppo held the third and fourth places with 11.3 and 8.9 percent respectively.

“The sales of more 5G smartphones and lower-to-mid-tier smartphones minimised the market decline in the fourth quarter of 2020,” said Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner.
