Reddit acquires lip-sync video app Dubsmash

Reddit acquired Dubsmash

Popular community platform Reddit has acquired lip-sync video maker app Dubsmash. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Dubsmash co-founders, Suchit Dash, Jonas Drüppel, and Tim Specht, will join Reddit.

Reddit confirmed that Dubsmash will still remain an independent platform but the company will integrate Dubsmash’s video tools into its platforms.

“Both Reddit and Dubsmash share a deep rooted respect for how communities come together,” said Steve Huffman, CEO, Reddit. “Dubsmash elevates under-represented creators, while Reddit fosters a sense of community and belonging across thousands of different topics and passions. It’s clear that our missions closely align and that our community-focused platforms can coexist and grow as we learn from each other.”

Dubsmash began as a lip-sync video app and became quite popular in 2015. It was one of the first few short video apps but lost its charm with time. Dubshmash also explored sales talk with Facebook and Snap.

Reddit is still popular for text-based content, but it lets users share videos, gifs, and images. Now the company is also focusing on video content and Dubsmash’s integration can help in making a better video platform.
