Researchers set a new record for fastest internet at 178 Tbps

Fastest Internet

Most broadband consumers in India have access to 50 or 100 Mbps Internet speeds. Some providers also offering internet speed of up to 1Gbps in metro cities. If you think this is too fast, you will be surprised to know that researchers at University College London have set a new world record for the fastest internet in the world. They got success in achieving 178 terabits per second (Tbps) speed. That’s 178,000 Gbps or 178,000,000 Mbps.

This project trial was conducted by Dr. Lidia Galdino from the Royal Academy of Engineering, Xtera, and Kiddi Research.

With this 178 Tbps internet speed, you can download 1,500 4K movies (15GB of size) in a second.

The technology used in this research can be added to existing optical fiber pipes easily. They used a bandwidth of 16.8 terahertz (THz) in a single-fiber core. This is four times the 4.5 THz used by most of our current network infrastructure. That means this new technology won’t be available commercially anytime soon. It needs an upgrade in existing infrastructure.

Before this record, the fastest internet speed was reported at 44.2 Tbps in Australia. The new record is almost four times faster.
