Qualcomm has just announced the upgrade to its fast charge standard Quick Charge dubbed as Quick Charge 5. This upgrade came 3 years after the launch of the last version Quick Charge 4+. QC5 supports 100W+ charging and backward compatibility with older Quick Charge versions and USB Power Delivery.

Quick Charge 5 promises to charge a 4500 mAh battery from 0 to 50 percent in just 5 minutes and from 0 to 100% in less than 15 minutes. Qualcomm also claims that the new standard keeps phone 10°C cooler than QC 4+.

The company also claims that its system is safer than plain Power Delivery too. It includes 8 levels of voltage protection, 3 levels of current protection, 3 levels of thermal protection and 3 timer protections, plus overvoltage protection at 25 V.

Smartphones that still use single battery cells will see advantages in charging speed but it will be limited 45W peak power.

Qualcomm also next generation premium tier power management ICs (PMIC) including SMB1396 and SMB1398 supporting 1SnP and 2SnP batteries. These are engineered to provide maximum efficiency above 98% and support for more than 20V input voltage operation.

Quick Charge 5 is now available to OEMs and is expected to be seen on devices in Q3, 2020. It will be available on Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and future premium & high-tier Snapdragon mobile platforms.
