MediaTek has unveiled a new Dimensity 820 chipset. It is the successor to Dimensity 800 and comes with improvements in performance and 5G connectivity. It also supports MediaTek’s latest multimedia, AI, and imaging innovations.

MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC is built on TSMC’s 7nm FinFET‌ process and uses the same CPU microarchitecture as the Dimensity 800. It comes with 4 x Cortex-A76 cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz and 4 x Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2GHz.

The Soc also uses 5 core variant of the ARM Mali-G57 GPU. This is a minor improvement over the 4 core variant used with Dimensity 800. It also eats MediaTek’s HyerEngine 2.0 for improved gaming experience.

It also features MediaTek APU 3.0, the AI Processing Unit, offering better benchmark performance, precise AI-camera actions, and improves power efficiency. The Soc also supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM.

Dimensity 820 SoC can handle FHD+ displays at a 120Hz refresh rate and also supports MiraVision display.

The Soc can handle up to four concurrent cameras and up to 80-megapixel sensors. It is also capable of capturing frames at different exposures and fusing them into a single video stream for offering better video output. It supports Imagiq 5.0 that promises Action Camera-grade Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), multi-frame 4K HDR‌ video recording, real-time video bokeh, and improved noise reduction.

The Dimensity 820 SoC also has support for Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v5.1, and UFS storage. It features an integrated 5G modem with support for both Standalone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) Sub-6GHz networks. It also supports 5G Carrier Aggregation, dual SIM standby, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), and Voice Over New Radio (VoNR) on both SIMs.

Xiaomi’s representative was also on stage during the announcement. He confirmed that the Redmi 10X will be the first smartphone to pack MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC. The Dimensity 820 seems to come with a bigger performance update. Not jus Xiaomi, we can also expect other smartphone brands to launch phones with this new Soc in the coming months.
