Jio Unveils JioMeet Video Conferencing App

JioMeet

While announcing the quarterly earnings, Reliance industries has also announced a new video conferencing app JioMeet under its Jio Platforms.

JioMeet will be competing against already popular video conferencing apps like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. Jio already has a big username in the country, so it won’t be hard for the company to get initial users. But it will be interesting to see if it gets success in gaining trust from business users who are currently using Zoom, Teams, or Meet apps.

JioMeet will be available across several platforms including Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. It will also be available as a plugin for Chrome and Firefox browsers. Apps were initially made live on App Store and Google Play but listings were then removed. The website jiomeet.jio.com was also initially showcasing key features, but now just says “Thank you for your interest in JioMeet.”

We have no information when the service will be available to users. If we see the past behavior of the company, it could roll out the service to select users initially before allowing all users to access.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, there has been a sudden surge in video conferencing app demand. This is the reason Facebook also announced Messenger Rooms and Google made Google Meet free to all. Now Jio wants to take benefit from this opportunity

The Mukesh Ambani-led telecom operator posted a profit of Rs 2,331 crore for the quarter ended in March. Jio now has a total username of 387.5 million. The company also confirmed that data usage per user has gone up to 11.3 GB from 11.1 GB in the previous quarter.
