When the world started moving to the bezel-less smartphones, smartphones companies tried several ways to position the front camera for achieving better screen-to-body ratio. In recent years, we saw different kinds of notches, pop-up selfie camera, slide-out selfie cameras, and punch-hole cameras. As a consumer, I was always thinking if companies could add an under-display selfie camera in the same way they did the under-display fingerprint sensor. It seems that has become the reality now.
Oppo has managed to put the selfie camera under-display that won’t put any kind of punch-hole or notch. Oppo has posted a video of the phone showing a full screen display without any notch. But it shows the presence of selfie camera when the camera is opened on the phone.
Here is the video.
In May, Ben Geskin also claimed that Oppo is working on an under display camera and Oppo has come with the tech within a month.
Oppo VP Brian Shen also posted the same video on Weibo with a message, “At this stage, it’s difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there’s bound to be some loss in optical quality. But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away.”
That means, this early prototype won’t give a good selfie experience but this will be better in coming years.
Oppo has several innovations that advanced the smartphone experience. It gave consumers the super-fast VOOC charging, slide-out camera, and periscope zoom lenses. Now the company is coming with the first invisible under-display camera.
