POCO F1 is finally getting Widevine L1 support

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Poco launched its first smartphone Poco F1 last year in India. Soon after the launch, several people pointed out that the phone doesn’t support Widevine L1, so users couldn’t stream HD content on Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos.

After this outrage on social media, Poco confirmed that they are working with Google and Qualcomm to release the OTA update to bring Widevine L1 support to POCO F1. Initially, they promised to bring it by December 2018 but it was delayed.

Now C Manmohan, General Manage Poco India, has confirmed that Widevine L1 certification is now available for Poco F1 and the company has started rolling out an OTA update for beta users.

Once the beta test is complete, it will be rolled out in a stable update to all Poco users.

If you are comfortable in installing the beta software update, you can get it right now. Otherwise wait few weeks before it becomes available to all.

After getting L1 certification, theoretically, it should now be possible for Poco F1 users stream content from Netflix or Amazon Prime video above 540p. But that is not guaranteed because video services will have to allow devices stream protected content based on their own parameters. A lot of video providers are reluctant to certify devices that have already launched. But I am sure Xiaomi has talked to video providers to solve this as well.
