Xiaomi Redmi Y2 First Impressions : Not Just A Selfie Phone

Xiaomi Redmi Y2

Today, Xiaomi launched its next selfie centric phone Redmi Y2. Even if the phone focuses on selfie, there is no compromise in terms of performance. Redmi Y2 starts at Rs. 9999 and will be available from Amazon.in and Mi.com.

The first thing you will notice is the same design that we saw in Redmi Note 5 Pro. The phones metal unibody design. Above the display, it has front camera and front camera flash. It uses on screen navigation as it lacks any capacitive keys. Still, there is enough space below the display. You can also switch from onscreen navigation to gestures. At the right, it has volume rocker and power button. At the left, it has SIM card slot where you get two SIM card slots and one dedicated microSD card slot. At the top, it has headphone jack and infrared sensor. The base side has speaker and microUSB port.

Back side has vertical dual camera setup on the top left corner and fingerprint sensor is also on the back. There’s a slight bulge around the edges to keep display safe but the display lacks any protection.

The phone features 5.99-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. You could miss the Full HD display, but the HD display helps in offering better battery life and difference is not much noticeable. Viewing angles of the display are good and it is also readable under sunlight.

The phone runs on MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo. The company has already announced the MIUI 10 that will be coming over the next few weeks.

Xiaomi’s love for Snapdragon 625 continues as the phone is powered by 2 GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor with Adreno 506 GPU. At this price, this setup is good for offering nice performance and improved battery life. The phone comes in 3GB RAM with 32 GB of storage and 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage options. You can also expand the storage up to 256GB with dedicated microSD card slot.

The phone features dual camera where it has 12 megapixels primary sensor and 5 megapixels secondary sensor. At the front, it has 16 megapixels front camera with HDR and front flash. Both front and rear camera supports portrait shots with bokeh effect. Camera app offers several modes and effects. I tested the camera and end result was impressive. Both front and rear camera perform well.

The phone has Face Unlock that works good. It also has fingerprint sensor and infrared sensor both. Connectivity options of the phone include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS + GLONASS. The phone packs 3080 mAh battery. The battery is smaller as compared to Redmi Note 5 but it has HD+ display. So, battery performance will be good enough to offer a full day usage.

Redmi 5, Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Y2 fall in the same price segment. If you need a light phone, go with Redmi 5. If you want good performance with good battery life, select Redmi Note 5. If you want good selfies without compromising with performance, go with Redmi Y2.

The phone looks impressive in terms of specs and design both. I will try to get it for review. So do not forget to subscribe us for updates.
