Qualcomm has understood that the same chip cannot perform well on all kinds of devices. This is the reason, it has built specialized chips for the Internet of Things and VR headsets lately. Now the company has unveiled the Snapdragon 850 at Computex 2018. This latest chip is designed specifically for Windows devices.

With Snapdragon 850, Qualcomm wants to bring Windows to portable devices. Son after this announcement, Samsung has confirmed that it will be making a 2-in-1 PC powered by the Snapdragon 850.

Since this chipset is for larger devices, it can run at higher clock speeds without overheating. It uses 10nm fabrication technology and houses a Snapdragon X20 LTE model along with Qualcomm AI Engine. The company claims that Snapdragon 850 is about 30 percent faster than the 835.

Snapdragon 850 is built from the silicon as the Snapdragon 845 and uses the benefits of Snapdragon 845. But it frequencies and firmware of SD 950 are tweaked for extra performance. It has additional CPU frequency in play, with the Kryo Gold 385 cores having a 2.95 GHz turbo frequency rather than 2.80 GHz.

Snapdragon 850 supports HDR displays and 4K capture through the device’s camera. The chip also includes X20 LTE modem that is capable of up to 1.2Gbps transfer speeds.

Qualcomm also claims that the 850 can offer up to 25 hours or multi-day battery life depending on usage.

After checking everything available about Snapdragon 850, I found that it is the Snapdragon 845 with few tweaks for optimising it for Windows PCs. The company has also confirmed that we should not expect Snapdragon 850 on any mobile phones. It is only for Always Connected PCs running on Windows 10 at relatively low price.
