Opera VPN to be permanently discontinued
Opera launched its VPN app for Android and iOS almost two years ago. It is a free app offering free VPN service to those who do not want to be tracked online. If you have been using this VPN app, I have a bad news for you. Opera VPN app will be permanently discontinued as of April 30th, 2018.
Opera VPN was offering free and unlimited VPN access to mobile phones. The app lets you select between a number of countries. This is the reason Opera VPN will surely be missed.

The company didn’t give a clear reason for the shutdown but we assume that offering a free VPN was putting too much of burden on the company. Opera is very popular with Chinese citizens where use of VPN is not recommended by government. Now Opera is in Chinese hands, so making guesses is easy.
Shortly after launching the free VPN service, the company also launched a paid Opera VPN Gold service for iOS users. It was offering boosted speed, more regions and dedicated customer support for $30 a year. If you are the one who signed up for Gold service, you will get free access to SurfEasy Ultra for a year. SurfEasy Ultra costs $12 a month and offers usage on up to 5 devices, access to 28 regions and strict no-log policy.
If you have been using the free Opera VPN service, Opera will also provide you 80 percent discount on SurfEasy Total VPN through the latest version of the Opera VPN iOS and Android apps. SurfEasy Total costs $5 a month and includes 16 regions.
It is worth to note that Opera bought SurfEasy back in 2015. Then it used SurfEasy as a backend to launch Opera VPN for desktop and then Opera VPN for mobile devices. The “terms of service” clearly mention that “The Service is offered by SurfEasy Inc., an Opera company”. So moving to SurfEasy will not impact your experience.
