Vivo V9 Impressions: Android Phone with Notch

Vivo V9 Impressions

Vivo has launched its new flagship selfie phone Vivo V9 in Indian market. The phone is priced at Rs. 22990 and will be available starting April 2. The phone offers premium design and good specifications. As always, Vivo has given camera a priority and picked a dual camera setup and AI beauty to offer you good camera and selfie experience. I spend enough time with the device and found several notable things. Here is my first impressions of Vivo V9.

Design of Vivo V9 is really attractive and it looks premium. The phone has full frontal display with the bezels. The first thing you will notice in the phone is its top-notch. The notch houses 24-megapixel selfie camera, notification LED and earpiece. The phone has 6.3-inch display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and 1080×2280 pixels resolution. It has glass back with a vertical dual camera setup. The glossy finish is also fingerprint magnet and you will need to clean it often. Curves at the sides offer good grip. Fingerprint sensor is also located on the back panel. The phone has volume rocket at the right edge along with power button. The slots for two Nan-SIMs as well as a dedicated microSD card slot is on the left. The top side has headphone jack and base side has speaker and USB type C port.

The FHD+ display offers nice viewing angles and good outdoor visibility. The display offers amazing experience while watching videos and playing games. The display is also protected with Corning Gorilla Glass.

The phone runs on Funtouch OS 4.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The device comes with February Android security. The UI is clean and performs nice. There are several gestures and animation effects. A lot of things in UI have been taken from iPhone X. You can swipe upwards from the bottom of the screen to go back. If you stop half way while swiping upwards, it reveals app switcher. There are lots of other interesting things that make overall experience good. If you are a gamer, there is also a new Game Mode. It allows users to block all interruptions including calls and other alert notification.

The phone has octa-core Snapdragon 626 processor with 4GB of RAM.. This processor is good enough to handle day-to-day tasks. 4GB RAM is good enough to offer good multitasking. The phone packs 64GB of storage that offer dedicated microSD card slot to expand storage.

Like other Vivo phones, this phone also focuses a lot on the camera. It features a dual camera setup that includes 16 megapixels primary sensor (f/2.0 aperture) and 5 megapixels secondary sensor (f/2.4 aperture). The secondary camera captures depth information for offering good portrait shots with bokeh effect. The camera also features Live Photos and HDR. It has 24 megapixels front camera that uses software to offer bokeh effect for selfie portrait. It also has display flash for good selfie in low light.

I used this camera and here are few camera samples.

The front camera also supports face unlock. I tested this feature multiple times and it works well.

Vivo V9 supports 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, dual SIM and micro USB port The phone packs 3260 mAh battery that promises a full day usage. I have not tested the battery because I had a limited time experience. It also supports fast charging.

Final Words

At this price, this phone will be competing with Moto X4 and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro. All these phones have similar specs but Vivo V9 stands out with its large 19:9 display and larger 3260 mAh battery. The display and camera of this phone also impress. Performance of this phone is also good. I have not yet tested the gaming, but I am optimistic because the Snapdragon 626 is good for gaming as well.
