Supreme Court Extends Deadline for Linking Aadhaar to Mobile Number and Bank Account

Aadhaar Card

The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the deadline of linking Aadhaar to various services such as phone and bank. The extension of this deadline is till the court delivers its judgment on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar.

Initially the deadline to link Aadhaar to various services was march 31. The new announcement has come as major relief for those who couldn’t link Aadhaar yet.

It is worth to note that the judgement will not apply to the deadline for subsidies and benefits under Section 7. For those people who want to avail subsidies and benefits of different government schemes will have to link Aadhaar by March 31. In 2013, Supreme Court prevented the government from forcing people to submit their Aadhaar to access to welfare schemes. But NDA government managed to get parliamentary approval for a new law in 2016 that made it compulsory.

The apex court also ruled that Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory for issuing Tatkal passport.

Linking of Aadhaar to various other services helped in tracking down several fake beneficiaries of government schemes. But many people raised privacy and data security issues. Previously, there have been several data leaks reports. So, people do not want their data to be misused.
