JioPhone managed to capture a large share in India’s feature phone market and opened the gates of several opportunities. Later, it forced other telecom operators to bring low cost smartphones with data offers. The only issue with JioPhone was that it is a featured Phone and lacks social media apps.
The good news is that JioPhone users can now access Facebook. The JioPhone App will be available on the App Store starting February 14. So, we can expect the availability of WhatsApp and other social media apps soon.
“JioPhone is the world’s most affordable smartphone built with transformational technology especially for Indians to migrate from a feature phone to a smartphone. As promised, JioPhone will be home to the world’s leading applications, starting with Facebook,” said Akash Ambani, Director, Jio.
The company claims that the app has been designed to offer a comprehensive experience of Facebook with all core features. The app also supports push notifications and watching videos.
JioPhone is priced at Rs. 1500 but the company will refund the amount after 36 months. So, the effective price down to zero. The only thing users need to take care is that the phone requires recharge of Rs 153 or higher every month to get the refund after three years.
JioPhone comes with JioApps to offers videos, music, games and news content. The company has already promised to bring other social media apps. The reports also suggest that the company is now working on a low-cost smartphone to replace the JioPhone.
