Xiaomi Redmi 4 First Impressions : A budget phone without any compromise

Redmi 4

Xiaomi has now improved its Redmi 3S with the new phone Redmi 4. The new XIaomi Redmi 4 will be available in three RAM/Storage variants and we hope it to beat Redmi 3S in terms of sales count. The pricing of Redmi 4 starts for Rs. 6999 for 2GB RAM and 16 GB storage. The 3GB RAM with 32 storage model costs Rs. 8999 and the 4GB RAM and 64 GB model costs Rs. 10999. The high-end model will be available by June end.

Xiaomi has adopted aggressive pricing strategy for this phone that may give competitors nightmares. Xiaomi has also opened Mi Home retail store in Bangalore and plans to open more soon. So, the company is slowing increasing reach in the country to improve sales.

Xiaomi has improved the design of Redmi 4. Now it looks like mini Redmi Note 4. The phone has unibody metal design and looks quite premium for the price segment it comes in. The company has added 2.5D curved glass at the front. Due to a smaller size with 5-inch display, the phone is easy to handle and carry.

It has three capacitive non-backlit keys below the display. The notification LED is just below the center key. The right side has the volume rocker and power button. It has 3.5mm audio port and infrared blaster at the top. The base side has micro USB and Speaker. The left side has Hybrid SIM slot tray.

The back panel has the rear camera and dual LED flash at top left corner. MI Branding is at the center.

The Redmi 4 also comes with 5-inch HD display. The company also gave a reason why it didn’t upgrade the display. The reason it gave was to offer better battery life and performance. This display is also good enough with nice viewing angles.

The phone runs on Android 6.0.1 with MIUI 8 out-of-the-box. Android 7.0 Nougat preview build is available for the device if you want to test that. The MIUI 8 offers dual space, dual apps, customization, security, app lock and many nice features.

All variants of Xiaomi Redmi 4 come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 octa-core processor and Adreno 505 GPU. You have 2GB, 3GB and 4GB RAM options. This processor is good in terms of performance. Considering the price, this setup should offer good experience and nice multitasking.

The Redmi 4 has 13 megapixels rear camera with dual LED flash and PDAF (phase detection autofocus) for faster focusing. It can also record 1080p videos. It has 5 megapixels camera with f/2.0 aperture at the front. I tested the camera to capture few shots and I was impressed. While I have yet to test it deeply, I think the camera might be a strong point of Redmi 4. Image look sharp on this display and focus is fast.

All three variants of Redmi 4 come with fingerprint sensor and infrared blaster.

The phone offers dual SIM connectivity but restricts with hybrid slot. It supports 4G with VoLTE. Other options are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and micro USB.

Redmi 4

The phone has 4100 mAh battery with better performance. The Redmi 3S itself offers good battery. With same battery capacity and better processor, Xiaomi claims that the phone’s battery will perform better. At this moment, I have nothing to verify that claim but I will surely test it when I will get the device to test.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 is a good device that fills the gap between Redmi 4A and Redmi Note 4. Previously this space was occupied by Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime but an upgrade was needed. I hope that Xiaomi will try to keep this phone in stock. Most of the consumers fail to book a Xiaomi device just because of stock unavailability.
