Asus Zenfone 3 Max Long Term Review

I wrote the review of Asus Zenfone 3 max last year in December and I was impressed with its camera and battery. Later I decided to keep this phone as my secondary device and then I became habitual to it. New devices always perform well but constant usage and updates make it slow and some devices even start lagging. So, long term reviews are worth to share. After using this phone for a long time, I am writing about this phone again to let you know how it feels like using Zenfone 3 Max ZC553KL for a long time.

Note: I use my secondary device with Reliance Jio SIM and hardly connect it to Wifi. I use it to capture photos, social media browsing, casual gaming and as a hotspot. I occasionally dial numbers but I receive frequent calls from friends.

The build quality of this phone is good and it looks premium. I already talked about this in the previous article. So, I don’t think there is any need to talk about that again. You can refer to our previous article on Zenfone 3 Max.

The software experience is the most important thing that usually becomes painful in a device after getting few updates and long term usage. Asus Zenfone 3 Max is still running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. But, it received few updates to improve the camera and performance. I am happy how properly this phone handles multitasking and offers smooth performance.

Initial struggle was the number of apps and seeing apps update every time phone is ideal but connected to WiFi. After disabling most of the useless bloatware, this issue is no more.

The performance of the phone still remains the same and it handles all kinds of tasks that I push on the phone on regular basis. I only do casual gaming with few of my favorite games and there is no issue in that. I still believe that the chipset the company brought in the phone could be better and this makes the phone overpriced. We have better phones with same battery and display but better chipset for a lesser price. But I also want to note that all those better options are online only. So, this phone is still a worth to note for those who are considering to buy a phone from offline retail stores.

The camera has received few updates and now I think it works better. Considering the price, this camera is one of the best in its segment. It works well in good light and captures natural colors. In low-light, this camera gives excellent shots. The selfie experience is also awesome and you also have beauty mode.

Zenfone 3 Max can record up to Full HD videos and you have now phones with 4K video recording support at this price. This can be a slight disadvantage for few.

When I published the review of this phone, it was not supporting VoLTE and I had to use Jio voice app. After the software update, now Jio is also working fine. So, you can also make voice calls on Jio natively.

The battery of this phone is still working fine. I thought that updates will affect the battery life but the updates gave it a boost. I still manage to get over 2 days of usage as I am using this as my secondary phone. The Power manager

The Power manager app of ZenUI works good and you get various options to optimize battery life. If you constantly try changing different things according to your usage, you will easily find the perfect optimization settings. The best thing I recommend is to use “Switch by schedule”. I tried this to schedule “super saving mode” during the time I go to bed. So, it almost stops consuming the battery at that time.

It comes with reverse charging support but I hardly use that feature. If can be a good option for those who needed.

I also want to note that Android 7.0 update brought battery issues in Zenfone 3. So, I am happy that Asus didn’t push this phone to Android 7.0.

Final Words

When I received this phone in past, I marked it as overpriced because of its chipset. And the case is still the same. If you can buy phones online, you have plenty of options to prefer over this phone. But people who cannot buy phones online due to delivery restrictions, they have this phone available at nearby stores. This phone has become better in recent months and is still worth to consider.

This phone is known for: Longer battery life, good camera, and satisfactory performance. What else do you need from a phone? In the offline segment, we have various phones focusing on the camera, but battery life remains an issue. So, Asus Zenfone 3 Max is a phone worth to consider.
