Google’s co-founder Larry Page backed a startup working on flying car. Finally, the long-rumoured flying car is ready and we have the video of its first prototype. The company calls it ‘Kitty Hawk’.
Kitty Hawk Flyer as an “all-electric aircraft”. It is designed to operate over water. It can hold an altitude of up to 15 feet. While the price has not been announced, the company confirmed the availability. This aircraft will be available by the end of the year.
Nearly a year ago, Larry Page invested around $100 million in this flying car project. This project is being led by Sebastian Thrun, a former Google exec who led the company’s self-driving car efforts.
The company claims that you will learn to fly in minutes. I am not sure if it is, but it seems interesting. The best part of this vehicle is that you do not need a pilot’s license for flying with this car. It is because Kitty Hawk is considered to be an Ultralight aircraft as per FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations.
The company confirmed that the flying car is safe and legal to operate in the United States in uncongested areas under the Ultralight category of FAA regulations. So, you will start seeing people flying with this Flyer in few part of United States by the end of this year.
This is not the only flying car project, but there are several other companies working on the same kind of dream. Few companies are still in early stage and few have the prototype ready. Aeromobil and Terrafugia are few other notable players who are also developing flying cars. Most of these companies are trying to focus on vertical takeoff and landing to eliminate the need for a runway. And this is necessary if these companies want to bring the flying cars for personal usage.
