Cyanogen is shutting down service on December 31, 2016; CyanogenMod project will remain

Here comes a big news for many CyanogenMod OS fans. Cyanogen Inc. has announced to shut down all services and operating system by December 31. CyanogenMod OS and source code will remain available.

Cyanogen Inc. aimed to build a better and open Android platform but it could convince the OEMs.

Cyanogen did wrong by ditching OnePlus when it did the exclusive partnership with Micromax soon after OnePlus announced its Indian entry. That forced OnePlus to go and build its own Oxygen OS. OnePlus Pun gave a huge push to CyanogenMod OS and after that controversy, CyanogenMod OS couldn’t be the same.

As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.

RIP, Cyanogen.
