Vivo V5 First impressions : A phone for selfie crazy people

Vivo V5

Today, Vivo launched its next flagship phone Vivo V5 in the Indian market. This phone is the world’s first phone with 20 megapixels camera front camera and moonlight glow flash at front. For this price of Rs. 17890, this phone seems a good deal for India’s offline market where people cannot wait for flash sales. Vivo is known as a company that focuses on camera phones, but the company is changing this perception with this new Vivo V5. Now, Vivo smartphones will offer not just good camera but good music.

While announcing this phone, the company only talked about the camera and music. It didn’t even clearly mention other specifications in detail and revealed all other things in just one slide. It shows how the company is interested only in becoming camera phone. I spent few hours with the phone and this is what I felt about Vivo V5.

Vivo V5 looks very similar in looks. It has the full metal unibody design with rounded edges. It has volume and power buttons on the left and hybrid SIM slot on the right. It has 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, Micro-USB port, and speaker grills at the bottom side.

Below the speaker, it has the home button which is actually a touch-sensitive button with the fingerprint sensor embedded. It claims to be fast and accurate. As per claims, it can unlock the phone in just 0.2 seconds. This button is also supported by backlit capacitive navigation buttons on either side.

This phone is available in Crown Gold and Space Gray colors and both variants look good.

It has 5.5-inch HD display based on 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass. The display looks good and viewing angles are also fine. It also has an eye protection mode that filters blue light to reduce strain. This is not something new and we have seen similar kind of blue light filter in various other smartphones.

It is powered by 64-bit 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek 6750 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and Mali T860 GPU. In terms of performance, this phone looks fine and with huge 4GB RAM, it will offer better multi-tasking.

There is 32GB of internal storage on the phone from which around 22GB will be available for users. Internal storage is also expandable up to 128GB, but Vivo offers a hybrid slot. So, you can either expand storage or use two sims.

This phone runs on FunTouch OS 2.6 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. There is no app drawer and the interface is quite simple but fast. The company has heavily customized the Android and added so many good features. The control center comes up when to swipe up from the bottom. You can customize the themes, wallpapers and transition effects.

It also comes with smart screen split that lets you work on two apps at the same time. There are various gestures and software features to make this phone interesting. The company has also included few bloatware but I have no complaints in software part.

The company calls it the “perfect selfie” phone because of its 20-megapixels front camera and ”Moonlight Glow” flash. This front camera uses 1/2.78 inch Sony IMX376 sensor with a f/2.0 aperture to deliver detailed selfies. This front flash seems to be smarter to offer the perfect light from the flash when you need. Vivo V5’s camera app also includes Face Beauty 6.0 Mode to allow you enhance selfies, reduces blemishes and more.

It also has 13 megapixels rear camera with Phase Detection AutoFocus and LED flash. This rear camera also offers Face Beauty, Panorama, HDR, Night, Ultra HD, PPT, Motion Track and more features. You can also try its professional mode if you need manual control.

I captured few shots and it was an awesome experience. I still need some time with the phone to say anything about the performance. Initial camera impressions are awesome.

Vivo V5 comes with various connectivity options including 4G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS + GLONASS and micro USB port. It also supports USB OTG, but you will have to turn it on before you use it.

The company also talk about its music experience. It is packed with the AK4376 audio chip to offer Hi-Fi sound. But I couldn’t check this, so I have nothing to say about this.

This phone is packed with 3000 mAh battery which seems to be smaller for this specifications. Most of the phones in this price range now offer more than 3500 mAh. I was also expecting the same. This phone is large and company could add the larger battery, but there could be some reason in the build that restricted company in adding the larger battery. I cannot say anything about the battery performance at this time.

Final words

I didn’t see any issue while using this phone. Overall experience was seamless. Vivo V5 is obviously an attractive deal at this price. The main charm of the phone is its selfie camera that will certainly attract buyers. As the company has good reach in the offline market, this phone will also see a good number of sales.
