While consumers were waiting for modular phones, Google has disappointed us by cancelling its ‘Project Ara’. Google has finally decided to suspend its ambitious project which aimed to build modular phones with interchangeable components.

It is surprising because company scheduled the shipment of Project Ara devices to developers this fall.

Now, Google has decided not to release product itself. It may license Project Ara to hardware manufacturers. Well, this is what Google do with Nexus phones. So, there is a possibly for an Ara-like phone sometime in future. If any of device manufacturer wants to work on this project, Google is ready to help.

The modular phone was a great idea but it was difficult to bring to market. Interchangeable parts were bulky and costly to produce. Google and its hardware partners tried their best but they built to become a real market product.

To remind you, Fairphone 2 is actually a modular phone which is available in the market. It has already sold over 100,000 units.
