The full-fledged desktop application will make it easier to send documents and make voice calls. The best thing is that you will not have to connect your phone to The Internet to use Whatsapp from desktop. When you are working on desktop, it is better to use WhatsApp. Using smartphone to reply on WhatsApp while working on desktop increases overhead.
