Direct-To-Home players including Tata Sky and Videocon D2H have confirmed to bring internet browsing applications on their set top box. This new addition will convert your existing TV into smart TV and will let you access social media and other similar apps.
Tata Sky is also in talks to e-commerce companies to make available their portfolio on STB. But, there is nothing much information on these plans.
“This launch of gen-next HD smart set top box demonstrates our unrivalled expertise and innovation in creation, delivery and execution of technologically advanced products,” Videocon d2h Executive Chairman Saurabh Dhoot said in a statement.
“We don’t look at ourselves as a DTH operator. We are a content distribution platform. The scope of that is defined by what content, which medium, what screen the subscriber wants. That is the level of convergence that Tata Sky is looking at achieving,” Tata Sky Chief Executive Officer Harit Nagpal said.
Good thing is that the service will be available at no additional cost to Tata Sky subscribers in the coming months. Company didn’t confirm the exact time frame for this.
This seems to be an interesting move. People who cannot afford smartTV will be able to use those smart capabilities in their TV. They will be able to check social media updates and even use Skype like services. I cannot say much because of less information availability. But, you must stay tuned for more updates.
