Cornell’s new tool “Merlin Bird Photo ID” can help you in identifying bird species in photos

Merlin Bird Photo ID

Merlin Bird Photo IDIf you are a bird watcher who usually takes interest in birds, there is a good news. Cornell University and Visipedia research projects collaborated to launch a new tool “Merlin Bird Photo ID” which can help you in identifying bird species in photos.

To get information about the bird on the photo, you just need to upload the photo. Then this tool asks users to tell when and where the photo was taken. Then it asks users to draw a box around the bird, tap on its bill, eye, and then tail. Wait for few seconds and then it will tell you the most possible species.

In mobile app, the process is not the same. It asks for the bird’s appearance and what the bird is doing in the photo.

This tool is not pretty accurate but the accuracy will improve with time. To make the accurate predictions, it uses more than 70 million bird sightings recorded by thousands of bird enthusiasts in the eBird.org database.

The tool is available online. Mobile apps are also available for iOS and Android devices.
