Indian smartphone company Micromax has become the leading smartphone company in Indian market for the first time. As per the research firm Canalys, Micromax sold more smartphones in the fourth quarter of the year than Samsung sold.
Canalys report claims that Micromax has 22% market share in smartphone sales in India from October to December. In the same time, Samsung only has 20% market share. Karbonn was at third place in this quarter. Overall 21.6 million smartphones were sold in this quarter. The top four smartphone companies in Q4 2014 in India by units shipped were Micromax, Samsung, Karbonn and Lava.
Micromax’s performance is increasing due to its low cost but high end smartphone in Indian market. It is offering better specifications at very low price in India. Most of the devices sold in India in Q4 were priced the $100-$200 range. Almost 25% smartphone sold in this quarter were priced under $100. In both these segments, Indian smartphone companies are leading. This is why Micromax, Karbonn and Lava are performing well.
This year was not good for Samsung. It has lost in most of the countries where it was leading. Apple has made the history of best quarterly profit by selling more number of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. I think this year 2015 is not going to bring good new for Samsung. Samsung is preparing to launch its next Flagship device Galaxy S6 at MWC in March. It is expecting good from this device. I think Samsung to redefine its strategy for emerging markets like India.
