It looks like soon you will be able to use WhatsApp from desktop via web client. Few reports confirmed that WhatsApp is quietly working on a web client.

A dutch blog AndroidWorld.nl discovered code in version 2.11.471 of WhatsApp Android app which has mentioned “WhatsApp Web” in the code. Cone also has lines mentioning web session and web log in or log out. So, we can assume that WhatsApp may be soon land to our desktop via a web client.

Whatsapp web

Earlier this week, Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov also confirmed that WhatsApp tried to contact their web developer. This may be another reason why we can expect a web version in development.

In mobile device, WhatsApp authenticate a user via mobile number by sending code via SMS on number. But we cannot say how it will authenticate user on the web. I think there will be a password which can be generated from mobile app and then this password with phone number will be used to authenticate the user for web login. On Telegram, it sens one time code to your mobile every time you try to use Telegram on web. But AndroidWorld.nl found that WhatsApp is thinking to use a QR code for the link.

Sub domain web.whatsapp.com also exists but asks for Google account authentication. We can expect web version to come on this subdomain.

With 600 million active users, Whatsapp is the biggest player in the mobile messaging. Other like Line, Viber, Telegram and WeChat already has web client for their service.

In my personal opinion, WhatsApp for web is not a good idea. WhatsApp is close to people because it is on their phones. Making it or web will make vulnerable to various attacks. Users will have to manager another password. I hope WhatsApp will come with a proper solution with this new web version.
