US-based Motorola Mobility has announced that it is shutting down its operation in India and going to restructure the company. By shutting down from India, company has planned to cut near 20,000 jobs.

Motorola mobiles and smartphones will be available in India till stocks are dried up. Its service centre will also work but do not know for how long.

CEO of Motorola Dennis Woodside had also announced in June this year that Motorola will only focus on profitable markets. It would leave unprofitable markets, stop making low-end phones and concentrate on only a few models, preferably smartphones.

“India is affected by this global restructuring, but we continue to have operations in India and we will provide support for our devices sold in the market. While we expect this strategy to create new opportunities and help return our mobile devices unit to profitability, we understand how hard these changes will be for the employees concerned. We are committed to helping them through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs,” Motorola Mobility’s director for communications in Asia Pacific William Mos said.

Motorola is not the third company which will not manufacture featured phones after Sony and HTC. But it is surprising that a company is leaving Indian market which is one of the best market for mobile phones, smartphones and tablets.

In 2005, Motorola launched Moto Razr and saw a boom but they failed to continue the same growth. After that Nokia and Samsung never gave it a chance to come back in the market again.
