Few days back Google Chrome became number 1 web browser. Now Google has one more thing to celebrate. Google has confirmed that Gmail is now number 1 email service with 425 million users.

For many years Hotmail was at the top as most used email service. In July, 2011 Hotmail announced on its 15-year anniversary that it had 360 million unique users per month. Recent number from Google shows that it has just crossed Hotmail to be the top email service provider.

Gmail has seen a good growth in recent days and added more than 75 million users this year. In January, the company said on an earnings call that it had 350 million monthly active users on Gmail. If we believe on the numbers, Gmail has added almost 75 million  new users in just 6 months. Growth is really impressive.

Although some researchers still believe that Hotmail is on the top. ComScore’s latest numbers from May have Hotmail at No. 1 with 325 million unique visitors, Yahoo at No. 2 with 298 million users, and Gmail at No. 3 with 289 million users.

Now, we are not sure whether Google has announced right or wrong. But, Google never boasts in past in terms of official user count. So, we can expect that the official numbers are right. If it is true, Google has given one more reason to worry to Microsoft.

Google has not commented anything on this. We are still trying to know more.
