One paisa per second plan mandatory- TRAI

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has instructed all service providers to offer a tariff plan of one paisa per second along with other offerings.

According to TRAI, it will be “mandatory” for all service providers to offer at least one tariff plan in each service area for both postpaid and prepaid subscriber with a uniform pulse rate of ‘one second’.

“It has been observed that per second billing system is more acceptable among the majority of subscribers, because it enables the subscriber to pay only for the actual usage,” TRAI said while issuing the tariff order.
Pay per second billing was started June 2009 which was a huge hit and within few months it was accepted by all service providers.

“In order to ensure that per second billing remains an assured alternative option for all subscribers, it has been decided to mandate that all service providers shall offer at least one pre-paid and one post-paid tariff plan with the pulse rate of one second for local and national long-distance calls,” TRAI said.

TRAI also said that service providers can offer alternative tarrif plans along with pay per second tariff.

“The service providers will be at liberty to offer alternative tariff plans with any pulse rate within the overall ceiling of 25 tariff plans,” TRAI said in a statement.
