Twitter announced automatic link shortening feature

Over the last few months, Twitter is trying to add more and more features to its microblogging platform. After introducing follow button and a photo-sharing tool, now Twitter released a new feature that will short URLs automatically.

On the company’s support page, this feature has been announced. according to this post, “With Twitter’s new link-shortening feature, you can now paste a link of any length into the Tweet box on Twitter.com and it will be shortened to 19 characters. You no longer have to worry about fitting a long link into the 140-character limit.  If you’ve reached the character limit, you can continue to add text to the URL with no consequence.”

The company also warned users to take care of clicking malicious links that were shortened using an external link-shortening service. URLs converted by Twitter’s link service are checked against a list of potentially dangerous sites, and when there’s a match, users will be warned before they continue.

Twitter has taken this step to stop users from using other link-shortening services that are the main cause of spam. Adf.ly and adfoc.us are a few ink shortener services that can be used to share spam links. Although. goo.gl and bit.ly are popular enough, but Twitter does not want to promote other services. Twitter only allows users to share text up to 140 characters. So link shortener helps users to save space while sharing links. By default, the link takes too much space on the Tweet.
