Electronic Arts has announced its own digital gaming platform called Origin. This platform will allow gamers to purchase and download EA games directly. At launch, Origin already offers more than 150 titles for download. Players can also create personal accounts and enjoy both PC and mobile multiplayer games with friends.

David DeMartini, Senior Vice President of Global Online at EA, described Origin as a platform with two core features. It is a download service for EA’s best content, and it also adds a social layer. Over time, Origin will connect a player’s profile with friends lists and a cross-platform feed that shows what friends are playing.

Origin will also offer limited edition copies of popular EA games, including FIFA 12. Titles like Crysis 2 and Darkspore are already available, while upcoming games such as FIFA 12 and Mass Effect 3 can be pre-ordered. EA has also promised exclusive content and trailers for Origin users.

Right now, the store only features EA’s own titles. The company has not confirmed if third-party or indie games will be added to Origin in the future.
