Xiaomi Redmi 4A Review: Finally a budget phone with no compromise

Redmi 4A

Xiaomi Redmi 4A is a budget phone for just Rs. 5999. With this phone, Xiaomi tried to level up the budget devices and somewhere it managed to set a new benchmark for competitors. I tested the phone and here is my review of Xiaomi Redmi 4A.

Design

The design of the phone is inspired by Mi 4i’s design. Considering the price, the design is impressive and it doesn’t look like a cheap phone. With just 132 grams of weight, it is light in weight. The phone is made out of polycarbonate with the polished finish at the back that looks like metal from a distance. The phone is thick with 8.5 mm thickness.

From the front, the phone looks good. It has three non-backlit capacitive keys below the display. The LED notification is below the home key.

The phone has the volume rocker and power button on the left side and SIM card slot at the right side. The base side has micro USB and top side has the audio jack and the infrared sensor. At the back panel, you see the camera and LED flash setup at top right corner. Speaker is also at the bottom area of the back panel.

Not just in looks, the phone is also solid in build. I even accidentally dropped it once but it was fine. I still recommend you to keep it safe because there is no screen protection on the phone.

Display

The phone comes with 5-inch HD display. Due to small form factor, it is easy to use and one can single-handedly use it without any issue. The display is vivid and bright enough to be used outdoors under sunlight. The display has strengthened glass that is less prone to scratches.

You also get a reading mode that reduces blue light to give you a good experience while using the phone at night. You can also set this mode for specific apps and schedule it for specific time period.

Software

Xiaomi Redmi 4A comes with MIUI 8.1 based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The phone offers smooth performance and nice features. MIUI is one of the most notable custom ROM for Android due to its nice features. You get good privacy and security options along with several options for customization. You can even customize the notification light, capacitive keys, audio effects and enable one-hand mode. It also comes with dual apps feature to allow you use two WhatsApp or Facebook on the same phone.

Performance

Xiaomi Redmi 4A comes with quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor with 2GB RAM. This setup impresses in terms of performance. I was surprised with the performance of this entry-level phone. Not just day to day tasks, but this setup is also doing well in some heavy apps.

This phone also redefines gaming in entry-level phones. I tested few high-end games just to see if it can handle and enjoyed playing Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2 like games. While the frame rate was bit low, it was offering good gaming performance.

The phone is thermally optimized and there was no heating while charging, gaming or long usage.

Storage is the only thing I hated in the phone. The phone comes with 16GB of storage and you get around 9.5GB. You can expand storage up to 128GB, but you have the Hybrid slot.

The phone also has an infrared sensor. So, you can use it as the remote control for various electronics devices.

Camera

Before I start talking about the camera, you must consider the price of the phone. The phone comes with 13 megapixels rear camera, Single LED flash and 5 megapixels front camera. On paper, camera specs look good but performance was not the same. But the camera performance is still better than other phones of this price segment. The colors in photos are well-balanced with few minor issues. It can quickly focus and capture photos. The low-light performance was not good and it struggles to focus.

The front camera is fine for capturing selfies, but don’t expect something extraordinary from it. The video recording is also average.

Multimedia

The multimedia experience on this phone is fine. You get good experience with videos and audio both. I tested Xiaomi’s earphone with the phone and music experience was good. The speaker is located on the back and it could be a problem if you put the phone on the bed.

Connectivity and Battery

The phone offers 4G with support to VoLTE. You also get Wi-Fi, Hotspot, micro USB, Bluetooth, and GPS. This is a dual SIM phone but you have the hybrid slot.

It has 3040 mAh battery that will surely give you longer uptime. With normal daily usage, you can get 15-17 hours of up time and around 5 hours of screen on time. The phone takes around 2 hours in fully charging with charger provided within the box.

Final Words

Xiaomi Redmi 4A is an excellent device and it will surely give Xiaomi a boost if they manage to make it available in offline channels. The phone is good for first-time smartphone buyers. At this price, one cannot expect much. Xiaomi is already ruling mid-range segment with Redmi 4 and now it has targeted entry-level segment with Redmi 4A.

The only thing you will hate is the availability. This phone has huge demand and getting it on weekly online sale is a tough task.
