What is an IP Address?

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

The Difference: IPv4 vs. IPv6

  • IPv4: Uses 32-bit addresses (e.g., `192.168.1.1`). It supports about 4.3 billion unique addresses, which are now largely exhausted.
  • IPv6: Uses 128-bit addresses (e.g., `2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334`). It was developed to address IPv4 exhaustion, supporting an almost unlimited number of addresses.

IP Geolocation and Privacy

The location displayed is the approximate physical location of your ISP's server or the last known public-facing routing point. It is not your exact physical address. Use a VPN to mask your public IP address and protect your online privacy.
