There’s a new social media app trending among users in the US. The app is called noplace and it has already gained popularity among Gen Z users. Although noplace is a new app, the concept behind the app is not new. The app seems to borrow several features from existing social media platforms.
This new social media app was founded by a 27-year-old tech entrepreneur Tiffany Zhong. noplace began as Zebra IQ, a platform where Gen Z can provide feedback to brands. Then it evolved as nospace. noplace was initially called nospace, but it was forced to change the name due to the trademark issue. The name nospace was too similar to ‘MySpace’ and the company didn’t want to fall into legal trouble.
noplace is a text-based social media platform similar to X, but has customizable profiles similar to MySpace. Users can customize their noplace profiles by adding songs, showcasing their interests, adding relationship statuses, and customizing color schemes. The app has profiles, profile feeds, and notifications similar to other social media platforms.
The social media platform lets users add profile tags called ‘stars.’ These tags allow users to discover other users with similar interests. Users can either starts from a pre-defined list provided by the platform or create custom stars to represent their personality on the platform. Stars are displayed on user profiles for others to see. Users can easily find users with similar interests by filtering search results based on stars. This can help in finding people with similar interests and participate in discussions.
The platform only allows text posts for having meaningful conversations through words. It wants users to focus on thoughts, ideas, and experiences, rather than focusing on appearances by posting photos and videos. The platform doesn’t want users to waste their time scrolling through endless video feeds.
The app has two feeds. One feed where you see posts from your friends and another global feed where you see a global feed from other users of the platform. The feed will show posts in reverse chronological order. Unlike other social media platforms that use algorithms to curate feeds the app uses AI for content curation and suggestions. There is no concept of private profiles. But users who are younger than 18 will see a more moderated feed.
noplcae also has gamification to encourage user engagement and interaction. Users have levels and they can level up by their activities. However, the company has not disclosed any benefits associated with higher levels or how users can level up fast.
noplace is available on iOS. There is also a version on the web, but it is in read-only mode.
Noplace seems a new experiment and wants to give users a bit simpler social media where users do not feel pressure to compete with others’ lives portrayed through photos and videos. The encourages connection based on ideas and personalities. They can have deeper and more meaningful conversations on a topic and express themselves through words. The app has managed to attract early users and is already ranking number 1 on the App Store. It also encourages users to invite their friends on the social media platform. Right now the app is enjoying new signups, but we do not have numbers to share.
If the app wants to be successful, it should address potential issues like online bullying and content moderation. The gamification element might help the app to get a better retention rate. It will be interesting to see if the app becomes a permanent fixture or another social media platform that is short-lived.
