WhatsApp has begun phasing out its Avatar feature across both Android and iOS platforms. The update was confirmed through a notice on the company’s Help Center. Soon, users will no longer be able to create new avatars, edit existing ones, or use them as profile pictures. However, any avatar-based sticker packs that users have already created will continue to work.
The Avatar feature was first introduced globally on December 7, 2022. It allowed users to build a digital version of themselves directly within WhatsApp. The idea was similar to avatars seen on apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
Users could access the feature from settings and create a custom avatar using a detailed editor. It offered options to adjust skin tone, face shape, hairstyle, outfits, and more. There was even a “mirror” tool that used the front camera to help match facial features more accurately. The feature also supported accessories like glasses, headwear, bindis, and makeup.
Once an avatar was created, WhatsApp automatically generated a sticker pack with 36 personalized stickers. These stickers showed different emotions and actions, such as laughing, crying, waving, and celebrating. Users could easily send them from the emoji section in chats.
WhatsApp has not shared an official reason for removing the feature. However, it is likely due to low usage. The Avatar feature never really became a core part of how people use WhatsApp. Most users still prefer simple profile photos and standard emojis or stickers.
This move makes sense from a product perspective. Removing underused features helps keep the app clean and focused. It also allows the company to invest more time in features that matter to a larger number of users.
At the same time, this also shows that not every feature from Meta’s ecosystem works equally well across all platforms. While avatars are popular on Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp remains a more utility-focused app where users value speed, privacy, and simplicity over personalization.
