The short-video making app TikTok has seen a surge in popularity due to the lockdown in several countries. Now the analytics platform Sensor Tower has claimed that the app has crossed two billion downloads worldwide on the App Store as well as Google Play store.

Apple’s App store doesn’t show the number of downloads, so there is no way one can confirm the data. Bytedace, the company behind TikTok, has not confirmed the numbers officially.

India is the leading country on TikTok with 611 million downloads. This number accounts for 30.3 percent of total downloads. China is the second leading country with 196.6 million downloads to date. The United States is in third place with 165 million downloads.

In the quarter that ended in March, TikTok was downloaded 315 million times. This is the highest number of downloads for any app in a quarter.

It is worth noting that the number doesn’t include third-party Android store installs in the country. I also want to make it clear that downloads don’t indicate active users.

TikTok is the first App after Facebook’s marquee, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger to cross the 2 billion downloads mark. Here I am not considering Google’s apps because they come pre-installed on most Android phones.

Most of the TikTok downloads are on Android platform because Google Play alone accounts for more than 1.5 billion downloads that is around 75.5 percent of total downloads.

TikTok is also one of the apps that saw surge amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. Several people are now using the app to watch or create videos because they bored at home and have more time to waste.

So far, the app has generated $456.7 million in revenue out of which $435 million was made from the App Store. Revenue from Play Store is just $21.4 million even if the majority of TikTok users are using the app on Android.

Bytedance is the parent company of TikTok that started monetizing the app in India over the last 6-8 months. The company launched TikTok Ads to allow advertisers to put their ads on Bytedace’s different apps including TikTok, Helo, and Vigo Video.
